On April 20th, Reddit hosted their FinServ Summit in NYC where multiple experts, subreddit moderators, and social media professionals spoke on the impact of Reddit for both users and brands alike. Reddit kicked off the Summit highlighting a few very impressive facts surrounding the FinServ industry on the platform, including that the r/personalfinance is the 2nd largest topic on Reddit with 2.3 billion views in 2025. Also, 70% of finance shoppers used Reddit to research products and services in the U.S.
Reddit proceeded to highlight why the platform is distinct from other platforms. The key takeaway is that Reddit is a safe space for users to join and create conversations they are interested in. Since every user is anonymous, the knowledge that is shared is often honest because people are more open to speaking the full truth. Additionally, honesty amongst users creates a sense of community and human perspective which makes users even more inclined to keep returning to the platform.
Due to this, Reddit is an important platform in the search journey. An interesting fact about the evolution of the platform is that experts are observing AI utilize Reddit as a source of truth. LLM platforms like ChatGPT often scan subcommunities on Reddit for truth and create responses to questions. Reddit has become a non-search engine search engine — users are receiving answers to their questions from Reddit, which is why FinServ brands need to heavily consider using the platform in their marketing mix. If brands want to be top of mind in the search journey, it is best that they show up on platforms where people are in the process of decision-making.
In addition, the Reddit Summit highlighted the shift in the consumer purchase journey and how most consumers are searching more because of the uncertainty and fear behind making financial decisions. Reddit completed research on the search journey and saw that 77% of users switch between platforms and subreddits before making a final decision. This highlights the importance of having a multiplatform paid approach to create brand visibility and familiarity.
As the Summit continued, we shifted to product updates. One important product on the horizon includes Search Ads. Reddit has their own “ChatGPT” called Reddit Answers, where AI scans Reddit for answers to specific questions users may have while also directing them to subreddits and communities that hold the information presented. As of now, there are no advertisements in that feature; however, Reddit is moving to create Search ads where brands can show up while the user is on their search journey.
Reddit is working on improving video since that is the most consumed content today. The update will include a spotlight unit for video which will give brands an opportunity to show up in multiple spaces on the platform. In addition, Reddit will be launching a tool called smart cropping which will crop a 9:16 ad to fit Reddit’s formats which will help brands repurpose content from Tik Tok or Meta. Lastly, Reddit plans to include more performance goals related to video like a 15 second video view optimization. As of now, the launch of each product has not been decided, but the goal is to launch by the end of this year.
As the Summit was nearing its end, Reddit wrapped up with a topic that is becoming more popular in the advertising world — sports. Reddit hosted a panel that included the r/NFL Reddit moderator and the Senior Social Media Director of the NBA. The panelists discussed how much sports have become a major discussion on the platform and how brands can get involved. The Senior Director at NBA highlighted how it is vital for brands to listen and understand the communities they are showing up in and to approach them where they are. The moderator also emphasized that brands need to learn how communities operate, because understanding operation will lead to more trust from the community.
Overall, the Summit was highly informative because it gave us a new perspective on Reddit and how it is very much a part of the search journey. As FinServ continues to navigate the paid social space, it is important to consider the search journey of users and to consider Reddit as a space to be active in.
