Our Beginning
Harmelin Media was born in 1982 with three strikes against it – as a women-owned business in a male-dominated industry; a media-only firm in the golden age of full-service agencies; and as a Philadelphia company in the long shadow of Madison Avenue. However, founder and CEO Joanne Harmelin was undeterred. Starting from her home, with one client (Encore Books) and one employee, she laid the foundation for what would become one of the largest independent media agencies in the country.
Our Philosophy
Joanne’s initial philosophies – that clients of all size were entitled to the highest level of service and strategy; that long-term thinking was critical; and that people matter most, still permeate the agency today. Through her early life experiences, Joanne developed what she calls an “other-directed” approach, and Harmelin has always put the needs of our community, our team members, and our partners ahead of commercial success. That success followed is no surprise, because a company built on strong values will withstand the inevitable ups and downs of the industry.
Our Growth
Harmelin won its first blue-chip client in 1986 – a dealer association assignment from Ford Motor Company, and nearly four decades later, they remain a valued client. From there, it was off to the races. As Harmelin’s reputation grew, so did the inquiries and the clients, in healthcare, retail, packaged goods, education, finance and more. As importantly, the best in the business strove to work at the agency – our current president, Mary Meder joined in 1987, and EVPs Jen Harlacher and Scott Davis in 1992.
Our Future
As the industry evolved, so did Harmelin, always at the forefront of changing consumer habits and media trends. Today the company is technology driven and digitally led, with larger clients based all over the country in more and more industries. Through this rapid transformation, the core values established so long ago still remain, guiding the company’s commitment to innovation, integrity, and excellence in every facet of its operations. This steadfast adherence to its principles has allowed Harmelin to not only adapt to new challenges but also to anticipate and shape future trends, ensuring its place as a leader in the ever-changing media landscape.

As we’ve grown to nearly 300 people, we count six Harmelin family members on our staff, all committed to maintaining Harmelin’s independence, our employee-first culture, and our commitment to do the job the right way for every client. It’s a blueprint that’s worked for over four decades, and Harmelin’s story is still writing itself.
